What protections for outdoor luminaires

Installing outdoor lighting is a bright idea, but be sure that the chosen lamp is well suited to where it is placed and the use you want to make.

For clarity here is a small guide to the meanings of IP protection standards.

 What does IP protection mean?
On all lamps which are intended to be used outdoors, there is a protection index that is standard and established at the international level by the international electronic commission. This index is identified by two letters "IP" and two numbers that are variable. IP protection ratings are intended to classify electrical equipment according to resistance to the intrusion of foreign bodies whether liquid or solid.

The two letters "IP" are therefore followed by two digits, the first varies from 0 to 6 and determines the resistance of the product to the intrusion of a solid body, the second varies from 0 to 9k and defines the resistance of the same material at the intrusion of a liquid body (often water.).

Here are the different types of protection indices most common:

-        IP20: the 2 means that the luminaire is protected against solid body intrusion of a size greater than 12mm and  0  that it has no protection against splashing water. It is strictly reserved for use inside the house.

-        IP44: the first 4 indicates that the product is protected against the intrusion of a solid body of more than 1mm and the second 4 that no projection of water from all directions can enter inside. It is possible to use this luminaire outdoors without a security problem.

-        IP65: the 6 shows that the protection of the luminaire is total even facing the dust and the 5 that it can withstand the projection of water from all directions with force.

These three indices of protection are the most common but you should know that all combinations are possible and that the lights that are placed in the pool or the bright balls that are placed on the water are classified  IPX7.X because it is a material that does not fear any intrusion of a solid body and  7 because it resists the intrusion of water up to 1m deep.

These IP ratings are for electrical equipment such as outdoor fixtures and outlets, but it also works for electronics such as the latest waterproof and dustproof smartphones.
